How to Layer Clothes Without Looking Bulky

How to Layer Clothes Without Looking Bulky

Daniela Byrne

Layering is a practical yet stylish way to adapt to the changing seasons. However, often many shy away from layering in fear of looking frumpy or unpolished. Autumn layering doesn’t have to mean bulky, frumpy looks. In fact, layering can add shape and dimension to an otherwise simple outfit. It provides a stylish solution to making those summer wardrobe staples more versatile, as well as incorporating your favourite knits. Layering can also provide an opportunity to add a pop of colour or pattern.

Choosing the fit, length and texture of each layering piece is crucial to ensure you are not lost in your layers, and this guide will outline exactly how to achieve polished, intentional layering.

Tailored Shirts + Knit Vests

Knit vests paired with tailored shirts are a stylish, easy way to begin layering, especially if it’s your first time layering. To avoid shapelessness while wearing this look, choose V neck vest to draw the eye downward to the waist. Similarly, vests with tie detailing such as above give waist definition to avoid losing shape while layering knitwear.

Tip: ensure the shirt is tailored and not oversized to ensure it layers neatly underneath a chunkier knit, avoiding a bulky look from excess fabric. Pair with a slim trouser and kitten heeled boot for an elevated look.

Belts

Belts also provide definition while layering, ensuring your shape is not lost in knitwear or multiple layers.

For a simple yet sleek look, thin belts are the ideal option as they add definition without overwhelming the look. Chunky belts are perfect for accentuating the waist, particularly with midi dresses and wide leg trousers, drawing the eye inward. Belts also can be used as a pop of colour in an otherwise neutral outfit.

Tip: Tie belts are particularly versatile and can be tied in a bow or tied off-centre for an eye catching, asymmetrical detail. Pair chunky knits with chunky belts, and fine knits with thin, sleek belts.

Blazer + Fine Knit
Every wardrobe needs fine knitwear. They provide warmth without adding visual weight or bulk. This blazer and fine knit pairing is perfect for a professional wardrobe. Blazers add structure to any look and by opting for a fine knit over a chunkier knit is preferential when layering to avoid uncomfortable and unflattering fabric bunching in the blazer.
Tip: opt for sleek structured blazers instead of oversized blazers to maintain a clean, flattering shape while layering.

Tip: opt for sleek structured blazers instead of oversized blazers to maintain a clean, flattering shape while layering. Avoid overwhelming your frame with large shoulder pads, stick to subtle structure throughout the garment. Optional: choosing a leather or suede blazer can add texture to your look while remaining sleek and smart.

Dress + Knitwear

Your favourite summer dresses can be layered with knit jumpers or cardigans for added warmth and dimension, resulting in a soft, feminine look. This is the perfect way to get the last bit of wear from your summer midi dresses. Solid coloured midis paired with a striped knit can be a way to add pattern to an otherwise plain look. Selecting darker footwear and accessories can ensure the look does not feel out of place after the high summer months.

Tip: ensure your chosen knitwear falls at the waist to provide the most polished, flattering result. If the chosen knit sits slightly longer, simply fold the hem under once, clearly defining the waist. Knitwear that is stretched out or too long may result in a shapeless, unflattering look.

T-Shirt + Open Shirt

Shirts are a wardrobe staple. By layering with them you create a whole new look from the same piece, reviving your wardrobe without an extra purchase. Style with the shirt open or several buttons undone for casual layering. The fine fabric of the t-shirt will ensure the added layer does not add excess fabric or bulk to your frame.

Tip: Add a pendant to compliment this look and draw the eye inward. Style with your favourite denim and trainers. Optional: tuck one side of the shirt in if half buttoned.
